Dr. Maung Maung Thein was appointed as Deputy Minister of Finance in 2012, charged with the duties to take care of MOF’s International Affairs, Stateowned Banks and Non-Banking Financial Sector. He was the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for holding AFMM and AFDM+3 meeting in Nay Pyi Taw last year. He represented Myanmar MOF as co-chairs of AFDM+3 meetings in Nay Pyi Taw, Kazakhstan and recently in Tokyo.
He has checkered career, starting as part-time tutor in Law Department, Yangon University and moved on to Housing Authority, National Shipping Line and National Insurance Co. before he was nominated to join MOF. He is a lawyer by training, holding B.A. (Law), LL.B., LL.M. (Master of Laws), Ph.D (specialized in international Economic Law). He is also interested in finance and is a fellow of Australian and New Zealand Institute of Finance. He has post-graduate diploma in applied psychology. He has published 6 books and over 350 articles.
He is serving as Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission of Myanmar (SECM), Insurance Business Regulatory Board and Microfinance Regulatory Board. His extra-curricular duties include among others, member of Myanmar Investment Commission, Chairman of Working Committee and Multi-Stakeholder Group in Myanmar EITI movements, Working Group for Open Government Partnership, and involving in Kyaukphyu and Daiwai Special Economic Zone.
He was the architect of Liberalization of Myanmar Insurance Market. He has also set up the first-ever Stock Exchange in Myanmar.
